I don’t know if you love Canadian cinema as much as I do, but you should start. I mean I start frothing at the mouth from the word ‘Exotica’.

Here’s a great website that you should all register with. It’s called First Weekend Club and it basically notifies you when a Canadian film is in a theatre near you. Did you know that if films don’t get enough money the first weekend, that it’s usually ejected from the theatre? It’s true. And with American movies being shoved down your throat (not full yet? Here’s another Transformer!), it’s hard to even hear about these movies yet alone see them.
“But Canadian cinema is shit!” you might say. Well, bite your tongue, you. It can be powerful and moving, all without explosions. They actually have - gasp - character development! Now who wouldn’t want that. And if you’re still weary of our cinema, then rest assured that First Weekend Club reviews all upcoming films and only posts the “good” ones. It’s true.
Also check out the Canada Screens section (if you live in Vancouver or Toronto) which is a monthly event with a talk back and the DVD Club, which is kind of like a book club with DVDs.
You see, it’s all a cycle. “Shitty” Canadian films are screened, and no one sees them, so we don’t have enough money to finance films that are worthwhile. So really, do your part and rectify this immediately.
